Encouraging my hens to go broodie...

Here is Abby our Black Sexlink wondering what on Earth I am up to now.

This morning when I went to the store I picked up a package of plastic Easter eggs with the hopes that one of the hens will go broodie. I am hoping the colors of the eggs won't matter,I did try to keep the colors as true as possible. Now we wait and see what happens.

Here they are, the "eggs" sitting in the hen's favorite laying corner.
Cross your fingers for me!

  1. I love it! It reminds me of the giant emu egg stunt Sol pulled last year, only this year the jokes on the hens.

  2. So the plastic egg is supposed to encourage the hen to lay a real egg? Really?

  3. Margaret- No. What the plastic egg dose is it encourages the hen to set on a clutch of eggs,it's called "go broodie".It all ties into those nesting urges we women get when we are pregnant.
Once one of the hens gets the idea she should sit on the plastic eggs we will move her and some real eggs that are fertile to a brood coop,so she can be left to just sit for 21 days.
So far no one is getting it but I am not giving up yet. This time around I have time on my side because it is still early in the warm season.
    Good question!
